Life in Rhodes Island
People's Stories
|
On many occasions I have been asked why I chose to move to Greece and in particular
Rhodes. It started as a holiday 40 years ago. Having fell in love with the
country; the history, the culture, music & dance, its people, the food and of
course the sun it was just a natural transition to move here and set up a
business. It just took longer than even I had imagined.
I travelled to Rhodes in 2003 and set about exploring the island. Looking at business opportunities was one of the considerations but I also needed to be sure that is was a place in which I could live practically, bring my adult children to and build a future. Some of my family wanted to join me as they had known Greece since childhood. We decided to use all our abilities to set up a business, and so our quest begun.

Pinching yourself on regular basis is somethiing that comes as part of the package
when buying a Villa in Rhodes. Never had we dreamed such a purchase was within our
reach, let alone such a simple process...
Our adventures
in Rhodes all began when Katrina's mum, Joan, bought a plot in Gennadi in April
2007 during an inspection tour with Savvaidis & Associates. We were shocked
to find out that she had attended a property weekend, let alone bought a villa.
At the time, Rhodes was unknown to us so to satisfy ourselves that she had made
a wise investment, we had to investigate further....

We first came to Rhodes in the late 1970s with our family on a package holiday. I remember our first glimpse of Lindos on that hot August night as the coach turned the corner, all 12 of us gasping with delight and excitement at the breathtaking view of the village and Acropolis illuminated against the starry night sky. We were dropped off in the main square and led through the dark cobbled streets to our villas. Our cousins' villa, Arethusa, was probably the grander of the two, with its huge courtyard and ancient outside staircase leading up to a balcony overlooking the main street. Ours, Smaragdi, was more understated, but with its wonderful high-ceilings and huge chandeliers, was still pretty impressive. "Is this all ours?" our older sister exclaimed when she saw it...the magic had started.
So, two brilliant weeks began. Lazy days on St Paul's Bay were followed by strong coffee and honey-soaked baklava at Yiannis Bar, a reward for the strenuous uphill walk from the beach. Evenings were spent feasting on a meze of local dishes at Antika or Mavrikos.....fresh salads with juicy ripe tomatoes and huge chunks of feta, tasty home-made dolmades or the wonderful nutmeg-infused moussaka that we loved most of all. The fortnight flew, culminating in an elaborate escape plan from our parents on the last night to sleep under the stars on the main beach.

Tracy and Graham Evans decided they’d had enough of the stress and fast pace of living in the UK; they seized the right moment and relocated to Rhodes full-time. So, have they looked back since giving up their lucrative careers and moving away from family and friends? Not really.
It was during one holiday to Rhodes in 2003…we had hired a moped and were touring the island. As we headed towards Lindos, we saw a Savvaidis & Associates ‘For Sale’ sign….that was it, the seed had been sown: ‘Why don’t we buy our own Greek villa?’….Last year, we decided to relocate to Rhodes… Life is so short, and you have to make the most of the time you have.

Karen Read, 42 and her husband Stephen 45, come from Norwich, Norfolk. She works part time for the town council and he is a solicitor. They have three daughters, Rachel,12, Katie 11 and Hannah,7. The family owns a three-bedroom house in "The White Houses of Lardos" residence in Lardos village. The house is newly built to traditional Greek specifications. The village has an old church and only one hotel so it has hardly any tourists visiting.
We had 60.000 pounds in savings, that we put towards the purchase. The remaining balance came from increasing the mortgage on our home in Norwich. We were growing disillusioned with the performance of my husband's pension scheme, so we just diverted his monthly pension contributions into our mortgage account. It makes more sense and it is more fun for us.

Elaine Doig and her husband Gordon decided several years ago that they loved Greece so much, they wanted to buy a property there, as a holiday home with their future retirement in mind.
We have recently bought a two bedroomed detached house in the village of Lardos and were very pleasantly suprised at how easy the whole process was. Having both done research on the subject of property purchase in Greece it at first appeared complicated. Properties on Rhodes are rarely advertised in UK but we had discovered Savvaidis Associates on the Web and had been keeping our eye on the White Houses of Lardos for some time.
